# Apple Books digital narration: free AI audiobook from an e-book (gate for Cedwyn)

Harvested 30 Oct 2026. Companion to google-play-auto-narrated-audiobooks-en-es.md (Play route) and apple-books-direct-promo-codes-preorders.md (Apple direct e-book). Nothing here is done without the project lead's word: it is a new channel and the D2D route now costs money.

## What it is (Apple's own pages, read in full 30 Oct 2026)
- Apple turns an e-book file into an audiobook with synthetic voices plus linguists, QC and audio engineers. Listed in the store as "Narrated by Apple Books".
- Free to produce. Wholesale pricing "includes pricing tier limits". Author keeps the audiobook rights; no restriction on making a human-narrated or other version later.
- Only via preferred partners: Draft2Digital (indies selling on Apple Books direct or through D2D), Ingram CoreSource (publishers), PublishDrive (publishers and indies). No direct sign-up.
- Title rules: e-book must already be on Apple Books; you own audio rights; ENGLISH only. Judged on file quality and "content compatibility": no complex formatting, LIMITED FOREIGN-LANGUAGE WORDS, not poetry/graphic novels/cookbooks; plus editorial review. "Even titles that meet these requirements may not pass synthesis."
- Choose a voice per genre sample (PublishDrive: soprano/baritone, US and UK accents; genre voices fiction, romance, mystery, thriller, SF/F, "more genres soon"). Custom square cover optional; otherwise Apple pads the e-book cover.
- 1-2 months processing and QC; no pre-orders; if the chosen date is too soon it goes live when done.

## Practitioner testimony
- Sean Malloy (indie, own blog 6 Mar 2025): nominated a short story via the D2D dashboard, picked a voice, live in about a week (Apple quotes 2-3 months for full books). Voice "occasionally stumbled over tricky phrasing" but "smooth enough". Listing discloses a digital voice. No sales figures given.
- Apple quotes Stacy Claflin (USA Today bestseller) and IPG CEO Joe Matthews: backlist and boutique titles that could not fund human narration. Vendor-selected quotes, no numbers.
- No independent sales or listen numbers found. Treat revenue as unknown.

## Cost gate (new in 2026)
- Draft2Digital, 14 Apr 2026 (Kris Austin, read): NEW accounts pay a one-time US$20 activation fee when distribution is switched on; all accounts pay US$12/yr if net earnings were under US$100 in the last 12 months (from 14 May 2026, on the account anniversary). ALLi webinar write-up (15 Jun 2026, read): D2D rejected over 70% of submitted titles in some months because of AI spam; that is why the fee exists.
- PublishDrive pricing not checked this run. Ingram CoreSource is for publishers.
- Google Play's auto-narration is free with no distributor fee, so Play is the cheaper first test.

## How to run it (when allowed)
1. E-book live on Apple Books first (direct via Apple's web upload, $0).
2. Pick the partner. If a D2D account already exists, no activation fee; the $12 still applies under $100/yr.
3. Pre-flight the EPUB: plain reflowable text, real headings, no tables or images that carry meaning, footnotes moved to endnotes, no text inside images.
4. Make a pronunciation list of every non-English word. Count them per 1,000 words; if they are dense, expect rejection or bad audio.
5. Nominate, pick a UK voice, upload a 2400x2400 square cover, write an audio-specific description.
6. Listen to the whole proof before release; log any wrong place-name readings.
7. Measure: Apple Books for Authors sales reports; compare with Play's auto-narrated title, if any.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Fit is weak today. Cedwyn e-books are dense with Welsh place names and words (Llandough, Tŷ Mawr, Cydfin), dated record quotes, tables and catalogue references. Apple's "limited foreign words" and "no complex formatting" rules make rejection or mispronunciation likely. A wrong reading of the farm's names would undercut the nomenclature work on the site, so the Llandough Farm / Great House Farm separation must also hold in audio.
- Prices are fixed by the project lead (v0.0.2 £4.99, v0.0.1 free). Apple's wholesale tier limits may not allow either price for audio, so any audio price is the project lead's decision. No price tests.
- Order of play, all as PROPOSALS in the project workspace, none executed: (a) Google Play auto-narration first (free, no account fee, has Spanish for the Wales-Argentina audience); (b) Apple digital narration only if Cedwyn is already on Apple Books AND a D2D or PublishDrive account exists or the project lead approves the fee; (c) human or Welsh-capable narration stays the long-term route for the documentary-linked titles.
- Audio-ready edition idea for the e-book pipeline: a "listening edition" EPUB with tables turned into sentences and a pronunciation note. It is useful for screen readers too (see the EAA/EPUB accessibility skill).
- Never name the project lead in the audiobook metadata; credit "Cedwyn editors"; banned public words apply to the description.
