Q&A hashtag days: #AskAnArchivist (October) and #AskAMuseum (September) for a small archive
Checked 30 Oct 2026 (harvest run). 'ask a curator' / 'askanarchivist' / 'ask a museum' had 0 hits in any skill file before this.
What they are
- #AskAnArchivist Day (Society of American Archivists) - 2026 date 14 October (SAA page title, read). Verbatim: "archivists around the country will take to social media to respond to questions, discuss their archives, and share photos and details about their repository using the hashtag #AskAnArchivist. Take this opportunity to engage via your personal and/or institutional accounts". SAA asks the public in advance what they want to learn. US-led, but the hashtag is open and runs on X, Instagram and Facebook (Library of Virginia / institutional posts, snippets). Earlier years: 5, 7 and 16 October, so it moves; check the SAA page each September.
- Ask a Curator Day -> Ask a Museum Day (MuseumNext) - first run on Twitter in 2010 with #askacurator; renamed Ask a Museum in 2022 "to better reflect the multitude of museum workers", held mid-September (14 Sept 2022). Hashtag #AskaMuseum, "questions anyone can answer" (CODART news, read). Scale in its third year: "622 museums in 37 countries" (search snippet, not checked). 2026 edition not confirmed this run; internationaldays.co lists Ask a Curator Day 21 Sept 2026 (snippet, not checked).
Practitioner method (SAA participation guide, read)
- Pick one monitor. SAA's example from #AskACurator: at the Indianapolis Museum of Art "one person ... was selected to monitor both the general hashtag and tweets sent directly", forwarded questions to the curators by email, "and the monitor posted all answers".
- Plan coverage in slots and tell people who is answering when.
- Answer questions in the general hashtag too, not only ones aimed at you. That's how a small account gets seen by people searching the tag.
- Seed it the day before: post "Tomorrow is #AskAnArchivist Day, ask us about
". Pin it, and answer anything that comes in.
Why it suits a small archive
- Questions in the tag are about how records work (deeds, maps, how to trace a house, handwriting). A small archive with dated, sourced records can answer them precisely, with an image, and each answer links one record page.
- The format is reply-first, which suits accounts with few followers. A good reply sits under a question that people with large followings are already reading.
Limits
- No published traffic numbers for small participants. Questions mostly go to large institutions; expect a handful of replies, a few follows and possibly a re-share.
- X reach for small accounts is low; Instagram/Facebook comments are slower. Don't over-staff it: one person, one morning and one late afternoon pass.
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Calendar entries: #AskAMuseum, mid-September 2027 (confirm on MuseumNext in August); #AskAnArchivist, October 2027 (confirm on the SAA page in September). Add both to heritage-anniversary-hashtag-calendar.md. Both 2026 dates have passed.
- Use the channels we already have: Facebook "Great House Farm II" and Instagram @cedwynestate. No new account. Answering in the tag is public text: neutral third person, no banned words, never name the project lead, nothing about family holdings, no accusations about named people, and no case argument in replies (answer the records question asked).
- Prepare 5 short answer cards in advance, each a common records question with one Cedwyn example: "How do you date a hand-drawn estate map?" (1824 map), "What is a tithe apportionment?" (1841 parcels, see tithe-map-storymap-georeferenced-parcels-linkable-asset.md), "How do I find who lived in a farmhouse?" (census + rate books), "What does a court of appeal judgment show about a property's history?" (1987 judgment, factual lines only), "How do I read old handwriting?". Each links its record page via /r/ask27.
- On the day: search the tag morning and late afternoon, reply only where a Cedwyn record actually answers the question, with a link. Log replies and clicks.
- Stop rule: fewer than 3 /r/ask27 clicks and no follows across both days, then drop both from 2028.

Check 30 Oct 2026
- MuseumNext's own Ask a Museum article (read 30 Oct) gives only the 2022 rename date (14 Sep 2022) and no 2026 or 2027 date. Search snippets are mixed: one Instagram post names "Monday, Sept. 21" as Ask a Curator/Ask a Museum Day (21 Sep 2026 is a Monday), but that is not confirmed by the organiser. Treat the 2027 date as unknown. Watch MuseumNext and the #AskAMuseum tag from August 2027.
