Book clubs and reading groups: a free reading-group guide for a non-fiction heritage title
Skill harvested 2026-10-26. Sources: ALLi Self-Publishing Advice (Jane Davis, indie author popular with book clubs; read), publishing.co.uk guide by Robert Prime (last reviewed May 2026; read), The Reading Agency Book Club Hub (read), Vale of Glamorgan Libraries reading-group pages (read). Nothing to install.
Why
- Clubs pick books that are easy to run a discussion around; finished, discussed books spread club to club. Prime: slow, compounding word of mouth, not a launch spike; start 2-3 months before a push and keep going.
- Scale in the UK: The Reading Agency's Book Club Hub (formerly Reading Groups for Everyone) hosted 46,118 book-club members in 2024-2025; 94% of people asked read more widely and felt more connected (Reading Agency's own research, read on its page; method not checked).
- Local: Vale of Glamorgan Libraries register reading groups and lend sets of 10 copies free; named groups include Llantwit Major Reading Group, Rhoose Readers and Sully Readers' Circle. Contact: Barry Library [number kept in the project workspace], [address kept in the project workspace] They ask for title lists about six months ahead. Sets are print, so an e-book-only title cannot enter the set collection; the route is a free digital edition each member downloads.
- No hard sales figures from book-club outreach were found in these sources. Measure our own.
The one asset: a reading-group guide (free PDF + web page)
Prime: 10-15 questions that go beyond plot, a short author's note on what started the book, themes and context a facilitator can lean on; link it from the back matter. Davis: questions are discussion points, not answers; questions that invite disagreement are better; ask the questions you asked yourself while writing; cover setting, structure, themes, moral dilemmas, and "killer lines". Adapted for non-fiction local history: 1. Which record surprised you most, and why? 2. What does a survey, a deed or a newspaper report let us know, and what does it leave out? 3. How would you check a date like this one in your own parish? 4. How has the landscape around the farm changed in your lifetime? 5. Which voices are missing from the records? 6. If you could ask one archive one question, what would it be? (plus 6-9 questions tied to specific chapters and one quoted line from a period record)
Pitch (one club at a time)
- Lead with the guide, not the sale: "I've put together a free discussion guide if your group would find it useful."
- Offer access: the free edition for every member, or the paid edition at its listed price; Prime prefers discounted/bulk over free copies, but our free edition already exists.
- Offer a 20-minute video drop-in; Prime: authors who show up get recommended onward.
- Never mass-mail; personal, one club at a time.
- Where clubs gather: library reading groups, Reading Agency Book Club Hub, Goodreads groups, Bookclubs.com, Facebook book-club groups, our own newsletter ("is your book club looking for a local-history pick?").
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Link it from the e-book back matter (ebook-back-matter-one-next-step.md: keep one next step, so the guide link goes on the /ebooks/ page and the "about" page, not as a second CTA) and from the newsletter.
- Outreach drafts (HubSpot only, owner GO before any send): Barry Library reading-group contact asking whether a free digital title can be suggested to Vale groups; one draft each to the three named groups via the library. No DMs to strangers.
- Track: utm_source=readinggroup&utm_campaign=
; guide downloads; free-edition downloads; newsletter signups tagged src-readinggroup; any paid sale within 30 days. - Repeat bar: one group reads it, or 20 guide downloads in a month.
