# Buy Nothing Day (Fri 27 Nov 2026) as a counter-position for a small heritage e-book shop

**What's new here.** `black-friday-cyber-weekend-small-ebook-shop-uk.md` already gives three stances: ignore it, bonus not discount, or a short list-only discount. `small-business-saturday-uk-online-shop-no-discount.md` covers the Saturday. This file adds a **fourth stance: say something on Black Friday that isn't a sale.** It also sets the rules that keep that from reading as a gimmick.

## Facts
- **Buy Nothing Day 2026 is Friday 27 November**, the same day as Black Friday (buynothingday.co.uk, read: "a 24 hour detox from consumerism … a personal experiment or public statement"). In the UK it is a Friday event; some countries keep the Saturday (Wikipedia, snippet).
- **Patagonia, "Don't Buy This Jacket", NYT, Black Friday 2011:**
  - David Gelles' book excerpt (read): the then CEO Casey Sheahan said "for that $57,000 ad … we got $40 million to $50 million of free publicity".
  - A board member warned beforehand that it could read as "hypocritical … inauthentic marketing gimmickry". It was reworked to tie in Common Threads (repair, reuse, resale), so the ask was backed by something the company did.
  - Revenue was reported at about $543m in 2012, up from about $415m (case-study and Investopedia snippets; **not checked against a primary filing**). Part of that growth was in train already, so don't read cause into it.
- **REI #OptOutside, 2015:** REI closed all stores on Black Friday and paid staff. More than **1.4 million people and 170 organisations** joined in year one (REI's own history page and Fast Company, snippets; the REI page timed out for me). REI later made the closure permanent.
- **No small-seller numbers exist.** I found no 2025–26 case study with figures for a micro shop that took a Buy Nothing / opt-out stance. Treat this as a positioning move whose measurable result is sign-ups, replies and shares, **not sales**.

## Rules (from the cases)
1. **It must match what you already are.** Both cases worked because the brand's mission was on record before the ad. If the message is new on that day, it's a gimmick.
2. **Give something real instead of a sale:** a free resource, a repair or reuse service, a day outdoors. The "instead" is the content.
3. **No sales call-to-action in the counter-message.** A "don't buy" post with a buy button is exactly the hypocrisy the Patagonia board member warned about. The shop stays open as normal, but that day's post doesn't push it.
4. **Don't mix stances on the same day.** If Friday is Buy Nothing, any Black Friday bonus (stance B) starts later or is dropped. Honest-urgency rules still apply to anything time-limited (CMA207, see the Black Friday file).
5. **Measure what it can move:** list sign-ups, replies, shares and saves. Write down beforehand that sales are not the goal, so a £0 day isn't misread.

## How to do it
1. Decide by **13 Nov**, the same deadline as the Black Friday stance: B (bonus) **or** D (Buy Nothing). Not both on the 27th.
2. **Fri 27 Nov, 09:00 UK:** one post per network plus one short email to the list.
   - Message: we're not running a sale; here is something free from the records; spend the day walking, reading or visiting your library.
   - Link to the free item. The only link is the free item.
3. The free item must already exist and need no new spend: a public walk route, a free record page or a sample chapter.
4. **Sat 28 Nov onward:** normal shop. No "now buy" follow-up.
5. **Mon 30 Nov:** log sign-ups, replies, shares and unsubscribes against an ordinary Friday. Note in the growth report whether to repeat it in 2027.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn (PROPOSAL; pricing, email journeys and public posts need the owner's GO)
- **Fit:** Cedwyn's stance is already "read the records". The archive, the walks and the free evidence pages are free on the site. So a "buy nothing, read the record" message is consistent rather than new. That is the test in rule 1.
- **Suggested D plan, 27 Nov:**
  - Post and email: "No Black Friday sale here. Instead: a free walk around the old Tŷ Mawr fields, with the 1824 field names." Link to the existing walk/route or field-names page on Cedwyn (internal link, no price, no /ebooks/ button).
  - Bilingual line per `bilingual-welsh-english-layout-posts-cards-email.md`.
- **If the owner prefers stance B** (the bonus PDF in the Black Friday file), keep that and skip D. Choosing one is the whole decision.
- **Gate:** if the /ebooks/ signup form is still failing, the email part waits; the social post can go alone.
- **Success (written in advance):** ≥ 3 new sign-ups or ≥ 3 replies/shares across channels. Sales are not counted. Below that, don't repeat in 2027.
- **Kill:** any reply calling it hypocritical or a sales trick means no follow-up post that weekend, and note it.
