# Cadw historic-building grants + Architectural Heritage Fund Wales: gate (capital money for buildings)

Harvested 2026-10-30 04:26Z. GATE. Read: Cadw's Historic Buildings Grant hub, the Cadw LBRGS page, and the AHF Fund page.

## What the sources say (read 30 Oct 2026)
- **Cadw Historic Buildings Grant hub** lists three routes:
  - Listed Building Regeneration Grant Scheme (LBRGS): **closed for 2026-27**.
  - Urgent Works for Buildings at Risk: open for 2026-27, but **for local authorities only**.
  - Architectural Heritage Fund grants, using Cadw money.
- **LBRGS:**
  - Pays 50% of eligible works, up to **£250,000**, to repair, conserve and reuse *listed* buildings at risk.
  - Two competitive stages. The last cycle took Expressions of Interest by 10 Dec 2025, with decisions by 16 Jan 2026.
  - A good EOI does not guarantee stage 2.
  - The older Cadw capital criteria (2019-20 PDF, snippet only) say privately owned buildings are "not normally eligible unless regularly open to the public".
- **AHF (Architectural Heritage Fund):**
  - The UK's specialist lender to *charities and social enterprises* working on or from historic buildings.
  - The **Wales grants programme** (Welsh Government/Cadw money) offers Project Viability, Project Development and Capital Works grants.
  - The **50th Anniversary Fund** (Cadw-backed) is for *buying* and reusing historic buildings in Wales.
  - The Heritage Impact Fund offers loans with repayment holidays.
  - Buildings are normally listed or in a conservation area.
  - Capital grants need you to **own or hold a long lease** on the building.
- No award-rate data was found on any of the three pages.

## Generic playbook (for an eligible applicant)
1. Establish the legal hold first: freehold or a long lease. Without it, only viability and development money is possible.
2. Start with an AHF Project Viability Grant to test the reuse idea, then a development grant, then capital. That is the AHF ladder: "just starting, then development, then capital, then operational".
3. For LBRGS, watch the Cadw page each autumn. The EOI window was early December last cycle.
4. Line up the 50% match before the EOI.
5. Applicants must be charities or social enterprises (AHF) or owners and custodians (Cadw). Individuals running a commercial project are out.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- **Not a route for Cedwyn.** Cedwyn's work is digital (e-books, documentary, archive pages). It holds no building and has no freehold or long lease. Every route here is capital money tied to a listed building and a legal holder. Don't build bids or outreach around any farm building. Nothing about family holdings goes into any application or public text.
- **One indirect use, research only:** Cadw and AHF publish case studies and guidance on historic farm buildings. These can be cited as context on interpretation pages (internal links only on the site; record the sources in notes).
- Stop re-checking: the two Cadw routes are closed or local-authority-only for 2026-27. The money that fits Cedwyn's activity is the community and heritage-engagement money already gated:
  - NLHF and ACW (nlhf-acw-small-grants gate);
  - Awards for All Wales;
  - Community Foundation Wales (community-foundation-wales-fund-for-wales-gate.md);
  - Vale Strong Communities and the GVS fund (vale-strong-communities-gvs-community-action-gate.md).
- Ideas-next entry closed: "Cadw grants" is answered as **not applicable**.
