# Cardiff Welsh-language community doors: Menter Caerdydd listings, learner coffee hubs and Tafwyl

Harvested 30 Oct 2026. Topic: community building / local events / Welsh-speaking and learner audiences near Llandough. Before this, the index mentioned Menter Caerdydd only as a reading-group pointer, and Tafwyl only in passing.

## The evidence (read 30 Oct 2026 unless marked)
- **Menter Caerdydd** (charity 1098606, Yr Hen Lyfrgell, The Hayes) promotes the social use of Welsh in Cardiff. Its homepage offers **"E@chlysur"**, described as "a free service to promote the city's Welsh language activities and events" (read). How a listing gets in was not checked; the signup is an email link.
- **Learner coffee hubs** (Coffee & Chat page, read): Coffi a Chlonc at Radyr Hub (every other Wednesday afternoon), St Mellons Hub (every other Tuesday morning), Rhydypennau Hub (every other Thursday), and Rhiwbina Hub ("suitable for Mynediad and Sylfaen learners"). There is also a monthly **Bore Coffi i Ddysgwyr ar Zoom** run with Dysgu Cymraeg Caerdydd; the next one is Friday 30 October. All are free.
- **History / Literature / Culture strand** (read): free talks (for example one with Dr Sam Parry), a free Welsh-speaking guided visit to the 'Ffasiwn' photography exhibition, and paid courses (cynghanedd £98, poetry on Zoom £25). The strand does take outside speakers and visits; the booking route was not checked.
- **Directory** (read): categories include Societies (15), Learning Welsh (8) and Welsh Organizations (5). Listings are mostly businesses and societies with a phone number, email and website. How to get added was not checked.
- **Learn Welsh Cardiff** (Cardiff University, the provider for Cardiff and the Vale) runs Coffi a Chlonc and Siop Siarad practice events (search snippet only; the page returned 403).
- **Tafwyl** (Menter Caerdydd's festival):
  - **2024 evaluation report** (PDF, read): more than 36,000 attendees, 54 stallholders and caterers, 50 sponsors and partners, 22 local schools, and an estimated £1,844,133 direct impact on Cardiff's economy. Coverage came from Nation.Cymru, WalesOnline, Golwg360 and Croeso Cymru, plus S4C live on the Saturday, and the festival paid to boost social posts. Audience figures, read from the report's layout (approximate): about 74% fluent, 12% non-Welsh-speakers, 6% early-stage learners; 39% aged 25–39 and 26% aged 40–59.
  - **2026** (BBC Wales, 21 Jun 2026, read): about 20,000 people came over the weekend at Cardiff Castle; it was the 20th anniversary. The festival stays free, and the organisers may look at other sites after the queues. The chief executive's words: some visitors are "only on the fringes of the Welsh language" and Tafwyl "may be their only experience of the Welsh language".
  - **Dates:** 19–20 June 2026 per Wikipedia (not checked against tafwyl.org). The Tafwyl site's snippet states stallholder and caterer applications open in December. Stall fees were not checked.

## The playbook
1. **Free doors first.** In order: an E@chlysur listing for any free Cedwyn talk or walk; a directory enquiry; and a talk offer to the History/Literature/Culture strand, written as a feature ("one Vale farm's records, 1840–1987, in Welsh, with an English glossary"), not as a sales pitch.
2. **Learner hubs are listening rooms, not shop windows.** Bring a one-page Sylfaen reading (the heritage-learner-packs skill) to share, not a flyer. One visit, or one Zoom coffee morning, is enough to learn what learners can actually read.
3. **Tafwyl is a 2027 decision made in December.** A stall costs money and needs people on the day, so it is a PROPOSAL needing the owner's GO and a fee check. The free alternatives are a Tafwyl Week fringe talk (route not checked) or simply being in the festival's Welsh-media slipstream: send the papur bro / Golwg360 pitch in early June.
4. **Bilingual by default.** Menter audiences are 74% fluent, so Welsh copy comes first. Every English line gets a Welsh line, and the Welsh is checked by a fluent speaker (PROPOSAL; a machine translation must not go out).
5. **Measure.** Use `utm_source=mentercaerdydd|tafwyl&utm_medium=community&utm_campaign=cardiff-cy`. Our own rule: fewer than 10 visits within 60 days of a listing means drop that door.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- **HubSpot drafts only, sent on the owner's GO.** (a) E@chlysur: list the free Welsh-language talk once one is scheduled. (b) Menter Caerdydd: offer a free spring 2027 talk in the History/Literature/Culture strand, aligned with the Merched y Wawr South-East talk offer, so one talk serves both.
- **Tafwyl 2027:** in the first week of December, check the stallholder terms and fee and put a stall-or-not PROPOSAL in the project workspace Do not apply.
- The learner Foundation page, i.e. the Sylfaen pack "Diwrnod yn Llandochau", is what a hub visit would bring.
- **Editorial rules:** public text never names the owner. Never use the words: states, assertions, per, second-hand report, not checked, reported, deception, taken. Never call the family "tenant farmers". Keep Menter staff's personal contacts out of public files.
