Charter cards: Cogan chapel's mother church (1187x1191) and the Penarth moor concord (1266)

Harvested 2026-10-30 from the leads the last run left (Clark, Cartae, pp.361 and 685-686), read in full with tools/cartae_find.py (archive.org full text of Clark's 1910 edition; OCR, so spellings below are checked against sense, not a facsimile). Card A: "Cogan's chapel belonged to Llandough"

• Source: Cartae no. CCCLXII, p.361, "Decision concerning the chapel of Cogan", from Cotton MS Cleopatra A. VII, fol. 69b (the Tewkesbury Abbey register).
• What it records: William, Bishop of Llandaff, Walter, Abbot of Neath, and W., Prior of Goldcliff, decided a dispute over the chapel of Cogan and two parts of the tithes of Ralph de Sumeri. A clerk, son of Ralph (initial unclear in the OCR), claimed them under papal letters against Abbot Alan and the monks of Tewkesbury. Everything was awarded to Tewkesbury. The key line: "Adjudicatum fuit illam capellam pertinere ecclesie de Landocham sicut ad matricem ecclesiam" (the chapel was judged to belong to the church of Llandough as its mother church), and the tithes to the church of Cardiff.
• Date: Clark's notes give Alan as Abbot of Tewkesbury from 1187 and identify the bishop as William de Saltmarsh (consecrated 1185, died about 1191), so 1187x1191 is our working range. That is Clark's reasoning, not checked against a modern list of bishops.
• Two-Llandoughs check: ours. A chapel at Cogan with "Landocham" as its mother church can only be Llandough near Penarth; Paterson (CNS vol. LXVII) has Cogan as "a chapel of Llandough" in 1184-5 and 1238. This decision fills the gap between those dates.
• Card text (draft, neutral): "Around 1190 a church court ruled that the chapel at Cogan belonged to Llandough, its mother church. Source: Tewkesbury Abbey register, printed in Clark, Cartae, no. CCCLXII, p.361."

Card B: "Fifty acres of moor between the Taff and the Ely"

• Source: Cartae no. DCXXXII, pp.685-686, a final concord among the Margam charters, dated Monday 2 August, 50 Henry III (1266), made in the county court of Glamorgan before the sheriff Bartholomew de Mora. Witnesses include Walter de Sully and Robert de Sumery.
• What the text records: Richard, Abbot of St Augustine's, Bristol, the claimant, and his convent gave up to Thomas, Abbot of Margam, the holder, all their right in fifty acres in Penharth and Costenton, lying in the moor next to Cardiff between the Taff and the Ely, which had been in dispute by a writ of entry. Margam paid 45 marks of silver.
• Direction trap: Clark's printed heading reads as if Margam quitclaimed to St Augustine's, and our earlier skill copied it. The Latin states the reverse: St Augustine's quitclaimed and Margam kept the land and paid. Cite the text, not the heading. (The note in clark-cartae-landoch-cogan-charters-finder.md is corrected to match.)
• Costenton: place not identified. Don't equate it with Cosmeston or anywhere else until a gazetteer or Pierce's place-names book states so (not checked).
• Card text (draft, neutral): "In 1266 the abbots of Margam and St Augustine's, Bristol settled a claim to fifty acres of moor at Penarth between the Taff and the Ely. Bristol gave up its claim and Margam paid 45 marks. Source: Clark, Cartae, no. DCXXXII, pp.685-686."

How we apply it to Cedwyn

• Add both to the "From the charters" Thursday slot and the no-repeat ledger as the next two cards (A first: it is about Llandough itself).
• On the research side, Card A is a dated link in the parish chain (Cogan chapel under Llandough, 1184-5, c.1190, 1238; Cogan manor lands in Llandough parish, 1545). Card B is context for the Penarth/Leckwith moors, not for Great House Farm. Don't present it as farm history; Llandough Farm is not Great House Farm either.
• House rules: neutral third person; no banned words; the owner is never named; no outbound links (cite the printed book); no insignia, so leave out Clark's seal descriptions on the facing page (the de Clare chevrons belong to the previous charter anyway).
• Cards stay drafts for a person to post.
