# Christmas press gift guides: pitching a digital or heritage product (UK, 2026)

Skill date: 30 Oct 2026 (skills harvest ~21:15Z). Status for Cedwyn: PROPOSAL only. Press needs the owner's GO, so nothing has been pitched. Before this run, "gift guide" in INDEX.md meant our *own* gift-guide email (ebook-gifting-christmas-gift-path-guide-email.md); getting into *journalists'* gift guides had no skill. ## What practitioners report (read)
- **Lead times (PR Dispatch, UK gift/homeware PR platform, Cecilie Olsen, read):** long-lead print magazines are pitched in **July-August** and finalised by September; weekly magazines and newspapers in **September-October**; **online and daily press October-December**. On 30 Oct only the online and daily window is still open.
- **Most submissions are in before the first week of November** (5WPR "Holiday Gift Guide Outreach: 2026 PR Playbook", Kelly Carothers, published 6 Oct 2026, updated 18 Oct 2026, read; US agency).
- **What editors need at a glance** (PR Dispatch): high-res **cut-out image on white or transparent background**, confirmed price, one giftable hook. **File names should carry the brand and price**, because editors search their inboxes and folders by keyword.
- **Pitch shape** (PR Dispatch): three lines. Personal opener naming *their* guide; the hook (why it's a gift); the offer of images or a sample. Name the exact category ("gifts under £20", "for the history lover"), not "might be a fit". Put keywords like "Christmas gift guide" and the category in the subject line.
- **Follow-up** (PR Dispatch): **one** follow-up about 7 days later, and one around 7 days after a known deadline. No more.
- **Commerce desks run on affiliate links** (5WPR): a placement turns into sales when there is a working, tracked affiliate link, stock that won't sell out, and a pitch that arrives before the writer files. Many commerce editors are paid by commission.
- **Honest limit on evidence** (5WPR): market-level data is strong; 59% of 1,105 US adults planning to shop online would use expert articles and gift suggestions (Impact survey, cited by 5WPR). **Brand-level sales from one guide placement are "rarely public."** Adobe's 2026 forecast, also cited by 5WPR: US online holiday spend $275.1bn, with affiliates gaining 12% revenue share against 4% for paid search. Agency assertions (e.g. "500+ placements across 60+ nationals" for one US agency) are marketing, seen only as a search snippet.

## The how-to
1. **Pick one product to lead with.** PR Dispatch: most brands have one item that performs in guides. Pitching the catalogue gets skipped.
2. **Make it giftable as an object**, even if it is digital. Have a cut-out "gift card" image (PNG on white or transparent), a price, and a sentence on how the gift arrives (the recipient's email, a date the giver chooses, a printable card).
3. **Build the target list from last year's guides.** Find the outlets' 2025 guides and their categories, and note the writer and the category each item sat in. Pitch to that category by name.
4. **Three-line pitch, keyword subject line, images ready.** Link the press kit; don't attach large files.
5. **One follow-up at +7 days.** Log every pitch and reply. A "no" this year is a contact for next July.
6. **Measure:** a UTM-tagged link per outlet (`utm_source=<outlet>&utm_medium=press&utm_campaign=giftguide2026`) to see what a placement actually did, because nobody publishes the brand-level number.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- **Fit is weaker than for physical products.** Cedwyn has no affiliate network, so commerce desks that need Skimlinks/Awin links are low odds. The realistic targets are **Welsh-interest and regional online outlets and newsletters running "gifts for someone who loves Wales/history" lists**, plus history-community newsletters. Build that list from their 2025 guides and verify each before any pitch; no outlet list exists yet.
- **Lead item:** the **£19.96 e-book bundle** as a gift, delivered via the gift path in ebook-gifting-christmas-gift-path-guide-email.md. The Academy gift pass stays out until the owner approves academy-gift-membership-prepaid-pass-handoff.md. Prices as they are; no discount needed for gift guides.
- **Assets to prepare now (no GO needed, internal):** a 2000 px cut-out gift-card image of the bundle on white, file name `cedwyn-welsh-history-ebook-bundle-19-96.png`; a three-line pitch draft per outlet as HubSpot draft tasks; a press-kit link. Public wording follows the editorial rules (neutral third person, no banned words, owner never named, nothing about the 1987 case in a gift pitch).
- **Window:** online guides until about mid-December, so a GO in the first week of November is the last useful point for 2026. For 2027, put **July** (print) and **September** (weeklies) in the growth calendar.
- **Gate:** press only on the owner's GO. This file is a ready-to-go plan, not an action.
