Clark's Cartae: the Landoch / Cogan charters (finder, two-Llandoughs check, card format)
Written 30 Oct 2026 by the skills harvest. Follows the Paterson "From the journals" skill, whose
leads were Cartae pp.727, 984-985 and 1540. The full text was read from archive.org (1910
2nd edition, 6 vols, continuous pagination) with skills/tools/cartae_find.py.
Why this is a sales/marketing skill
Primary-record cards are what Cedwyn's channels do best. They are original, citable and safe for AI answers, and every card links back to the archive and /ebooks/. A 13th-century deed naming "the great road from Cogan to Cardiff" is a stronger post than any summary.
Two-Llandoughs check (do this before every card)
- Ours, proven by its bounds: Cartae no. DCLXVI, pp.726-727 (BL Add. Charter 24,285, undated). Walter son of Henry Coch grants Walter Piket 2 acres "in feodo de Landoghe". One end runs to "magnam viam qua itur de Cogan aput Kaerdif" (the great road from Cogan to Cardiff), and the land lies by "the rivulet which divides the fee of Michaelston and the fee of Landoch". Witness: Walter de Renny (Reigny). Safe to cite for Llandough near Penarth.
- The run it belongs to is ours too: BL Add. Charters 24,250-24,295, printed as Cartae nos. DCXLVIII-DCLXXXVI (pp.704-760), are one archive of grants to the Reigny/Regny family. Nearly every Landoch charter in the run names Cogan as a neighbour or witness, and three also name Kaerdif or Pennarth (scan of 30 Oct 2026). Still check each charter's bounds before citing it.
- Not ours (Llandough near Cowbridge):
- p.983: a 1305 charter dated at Lanblethyan. Clark's own note states it "relates to Llanblethian, by Cowbridge".
- pp.650-651: the fee list entry "Adam Walensis j. feodum in Landochhe". The Walsh (Walensis) family held Llandough Castle near Cowbridge, so treat this as Cowbridge unless a source proves otherwise.
- p.232: Clark's St Hilary note (Stephen de St Hilary, "Langeton, in Landoch", next to Lanblethyan). This one is ambiguous. Stephen also appears in our run (DCLVIII), so cite neither for our parish until the bounds are read.
- Llandough Farm is not Great House Farm. None of these charters names the farm, so never attach them to it.

Other Cartae hits not yet read in full: pp.361-362 (the Cogan chapel judged to belong to "ecclesie
de Landocham sicut ad matricem", the mother church; ours) and p.685 DCXXXII (1266 final concord over 50 acres at Penharth and Costenton; Clark's heading states Margam quitclaimed to St Augustine's, Bristol, but the Latin has St Augustine's quitclaiming to Margam for 45 marks; see charter-cards-cogan-chapel-mother-church-1190-penarth-moor-1266.md). Card format ("From the charters", one fact per card)
- A headline of 6-9 words, a present-tense fact ("A 700-year-old deed names the road from Cogan to Cardiff").
- A short Latin phrase in italics with a plain English translation underneath.
- Two neutral lines of context: who, what, roughly when. Undated deeds are "S.D." in Clark, so write "13th century (undated)".
- A source line:
Clark, Cartae ... de Glamorgancia (2nd ed., 1910), no. DCLXVI, pp.726-727; British Library Add. Charter 24,285. - A link to the matching evidence or wiki page on Cedwyn, and the shop strip to /ebooks/. Keep a ledger in the project workspace (no., page, date used) so no charter is used twice. Post on a Thursday slot so it doesn't clash with the Paterson Tuesday cards. Cards stay drafts for a person to post.
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Week 1: DCLXVI (the Cogan-Cardiff road and the Michaelston brook boundary).
- Week 2: DCLX (a marriage gift of land, c.13th century, Thurgoth family).
- Week 3: DCCCXLVII (Nordon in Penarth fee and the "Bigewei" road).
- Week 4: the Cogan chapel judgement (mother church Llandough).
- For a research page "Medieval deeds of Llandough and Cogan", use the table above as a reading list on /research/sources-and-archives/. Hand Nordon, Bigewei, Worbeysfote and the Michaelston brook to the field-names lane (Pierce 1968) to identify the places.
- Editorial rules: neutral third person, never name the project lead, none of the banned words. Write "not checked" for any reading taken only from OCR. No insignia: the fleur-de-lis seal on DCLXVI stays off the cards. No outbound links.
- Quote from the page image (archive.org reader or the NLW copy), never from raw OCR. The OCR garbles names (e.g. "L^NDOdH FEE"), and the field-name in DCLXVI reads "Stlad Akbk" in the OCR, which is unreadable.
