Cultural-sector audience segments (Audience Spectrum + Culture Segments) for picking who Cedwyn writes to
Harvested 2026-10-28 04:1xZ (skills harvest). Topic: audience research / messaging / targeting. Index had 0 hits for "audience spectrum", "culture segments", "audience agency".
What the sources show
- Two UK segment models built for heritage and the arts. The Digital Heritage Hub guide (Dr Stephen Dobson, 2022, CC BY 4.0, Heritage Fund supported; read) recommends both: The Audience Agency's Audience Spectrum (geo-demographic, 10 segments, 20 sub-segments, by postcode) and Morris Hargreaves McIntyre's Culture Segments (psychographic: why people engage, not who they are). Its practical advice: start with a persona (why we want them, why they would care, interests, the project workspace life, goals), then add behavioural (online vs on-site, what they buy) and geographic (local/regional/national/international) segmentation.
- The segments that fit local-history content (audiencespectrum.org segment pages, read 2026-10-28):
- Dormitory Dependables - 15% of UK population, 20% of active audiences; "hardcore history and heritage buffs" in suburbs and small towns; culture is an occasional treat, special occasions with friends/family, group offers appeal.
- Home & Heritage - 10% of UK population, 8% of active audiences; older, rural/small-town, reading, period dramas, National Trust members, "content exploring historical events"; best reached by "personalised communications through traditional media", plain speaking, familiar content, local connection.
- Commuterland Culturebuffs - 12% of UK population, 17% of active audiences; affluent, leaning to heritage, "willing to travel and pay for premium experiences", frequent attenders and potential donors.
- Case with numbers (MHM/CultureHive, The Postal Museum, read): MHM picked two Culture Segments (Expression, Stimulation) for an untested launch; low-cost street-art campaign built for them; 198,000+ visitors in year one (beat target), all 60,000 Mail Rail tickets sold within days; 58% of bookers came from those two segments vs 25% of the UK culture market. Vendor-written case study with a client quote; the attribution to segmentation is MHM's own.
- Status change to know: The Audience Agency was placed in voluntary liquidation on 10 Sep 2026 (Museums Association, 14 Sep 2026, read; its 2023/24 accounts show a ~£474k deficit after Arts Council England disinvestment). The public segment pages were still live on 28 Oct 2026 but the free Audience Finder-style tools may vanish; copy what we need now (descriptions only, for internal use) and do not build a process that depends on their site.
How to do it (zero cost)
- Pick two segments to write for, not ten. One primary, one secondary. Write a one-paragraph persona for each using the five Dobson questions.
- For each: the hook they respond to (history/heritage, local connection, special occasion, premium/collectable), the channel they use (traditional media + email + Facebook for Home & Heritage; email + events + premium editions for Culturebuffs), the offer form (plain e-book, gift, talk, print copy).
- Write every campaign piece (email, post, landing copy) for one named persona; test the hook on clicks per persona, not opens.
- Tag Mailchimp signups by source (talk, local shop, social, search) as a behavioural proxy; review which source buys after 4-8 weeks.
- Re-check yearly; drop a persona that brings no clicks after three sends.
How we apply it to Cedwyn (proposal; internal planning only)
- Primary persona: Home & Heritage / Dormitory Dependables in the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff suburbs - older local-history readers, reached through local history societies, talks, the local shop copy, Welsh papur bro and Facebook; copy: plain, local, place-led ("the farm at Llandough through its records"), no jargon, large readable type.
- Secondary persona: Commuterland Culturebuffs / diaspora heritage buyers (incl. Welsh Patagonia readers) - premium bundle, gift path, collectable print edition when it exists.
- Use the personas to brief the BIZDEV and SALES FIX runs: each new email or post names the persona it is written for in its HubSpot task note.
- Keep all public copy inside the editorial rules (never name the project lead, banned words, no accusations); persona notes stay private and contain no personal data about real people.
- Measure: clicks and sales by signup source tag, compared monthly in the Sunday growth report.
