Facebook Group as community engine + the 2026 link-limit reality
Harvested 26 Oct 2026 (skills harvest). Complements 8.md (Page posting); this file is about a Group.
Evidence
- Link limit: Meta is testing a cap on organic LINK posts for non-Meta-Verified Pages and Professional Mode profiles — reported as 2 per month; Meta confirmed to Matt Navarra that it is "a limited test", the allowed number "varies by account", Meta Verified subscribers are unaffected (Mari Smith, 16–17 Dec 2025, marismith.com). Page owners report extra link posts blocked until the 1st of the next month, and that comments share the same link budget (Facebook posts, not checked).
- Reach: a 2026 vendor round-up puts Page organic reach at 1–6% of followers vs 20–40% of members for Groups (fbgroupbulkposter.com — vendor figure, not checked). Gemma Gilbert (UK business coach): "FB Business Pages have dreadful reach"; her own group grew 0 -> 200 members in month 1, 350 in month 2, 500 by month 3, organically, and became her best client source.
- Her biggest list builder: the group's join (membership) questions — one question offers a free guide in exchange for an email address. UK note from her: screenshot/save the answers as proof of consent, then add them to the list by hand. (gemmagilbert.com)
- Her engagement method: themed daily prompts (one theme per weekday), clear rules against spam, a specific promise of who the group is for and what they gain.
How-to
- Create a Group linked to the Page (Group owned by the Page), name it for the topic people search ("Llandough & Vale history: Tŷ Mawr / Great House Farm archive"), not the brand.
- Three membership questions: (a) your link to Llandough/Penarth/Vale? (b) what would you like to see from the archive? (c) "Want the free e-book chapter and a weekly note? Leave your email (unsubscribe any time)." Save answers as consent evidence before adding to the list.
- Weekly rhythm (one post a day max): Mon "a record from the archive" (image + transcript, no link); Wed "do you remember…?" question; Fri a short video/Reel; Sun weekly round-up. Reply to every comment.
- Spend links sparingly: posts without links get the reach; put the one link in the round-up and the Group's featured/About section; the Page's 2 link posts a month go on the best deep pages.
- Seed members: invite engaged Page followers, link the Group in the email footer and on /subscribe/, and pin a welcome post that asks new members to introduce their family's link to the area.
- Measure weekly: members, join-question emails captured, comments/post, clicks on the round-up link (UTM utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=group).
How we apply it to Cedwyn
- Owned-channel posting is allowed (BRIEF.md). Creating a Group under the Page Great House Farm II (901925066346636) needs the Page admin; check whether the connected Facebook toolkit can create Groups (the Graph API removed most Groups endpoints in 2024 — likely a step only the project lead can click; verify before asking).
- No DMs to strangers; Group members who wrote first can be answered.
- Public text never names the project lead; banned words apply; no accusations about named people; links only to Cedwyn pages, purchases via /ebooks/.
- Expect link posts on the Page to be capped: prefer image+transcript posts and put the deep link in the first comment only while link budget remains; track how many link posts went out each month in the project workspace
- Join-question emails = consented individuals (PECR OK) -> add to the subscriber list with the saved consent note; never to outreach cold sends.
