# Flat Holm: the island archive and the Flat Holm Society as a small, close audience

Harvested 2026-10-31 (skills harvest run). Topic: niche heritage audiences next to ours. Flat Holm ("Ynys Echni") lies about 4 miles off Lavernock Point. It is the same stretch of coast as Llandough and Penarth, and the same Marconi 13 May 1897 story (see local-anniversary-community-piggyback-marconi-1897-radio-clubs.md; this file is about the island's own organisations, not the radio clubs).

## What is there (read 31 Oct 2026)
- **Owner/manager:** Cardiff Council, run through Cardiff Harbour Authority ("the Flat Holm Project"). It is supported by the Flat Holm Society, RSPB, NRW and Cadw (People's Collection Wales profile, read).
- **Flat Holm – A Walk Through Time:** a National Lottery Heritage Fund project.
  - £645,200 was announced 17 Jun 2021 (Heritage Fund news, read).
  - Wales247 reported "more than £600,000" plus £200,000 of council capital, so about £1.1m in total (read).
  - It won two 2026 Constructing Excellence in Wales awards, including Building Project of the Year (under £5m) (Visit Cardiff, 16 Jul 2026, read).
  - Its aims include "engage a larger and more diverse audience ... on the mainland, and increase our online and digital engagement" (Cardiff Harbour page, read).
- **Flat Holm Island Archive on People's Collection Wales (PCW):**
  - The account joined 24 Jan 2025.
  - It has small themed collections: Lighthouse 16 items, Birds 10, Archaeology 8, Residents & Visitors 6, Weather 4. It states "at least 700+ more items to be published".
  - It is the project's legacy now that the project "officially comes to a close in autumn 2026" (PCW profile, read).
  - The National Library of Wales accounts for 2024-25 name PCW support for island archive work on Skokholm, Skomer, Bardsey and Flat Holm (search snippet, not opened).
- **Flat Holm Society:** charity 1000899.
  - Total income was £4,546 and spending £3,111 for the year to 31 Dec 2025, with 4 trustees (Charity Commission, read).
  - Members get details of activities and an **annual newsletter** (Cardiff Harbour volunteering page, read).
  - It recruits event volunteers on Facebook. Its own site, flatholmsociety.org.uk, returned 403 to our fetch; it was not read.
- **Island volunteers:** up to 6 residential Trainee Wardens at a time, on a 6-month commitment. They run tour-guiding and education, and the island is open March to October (Cardiff Harbour page, read).
- **Reach, honestly:** this is a SMALL audience. The society's income is under £5k a year, and the newsletter comes once a year. No member count is published, so it is not checked. The value is closeness (the same coast, the same 1897 story, local archive people) rather than size.

## How to use it (zero spend, no DMs to strangers)
1. **Read before contact.** Search the island archive on PCW for anything that touches Lavernock, Penarth, Llandough, the Marconi trials, or mainland farms that supplied the island (boatmen, provisions, cholera hospital staff). Log each item's PCW URL and licence as it is shown on the item page. One third-party post credits a 13 May 1897 photo to "Cardiff Council Flat Holm Project, CC BY 3.0"; that is not checked against the item page.
2. **Give before ask.** If our records hold anything about the island or the 1897 trials that we own the copyright to, offer it as a PCW upload in their subject area. Our PCW account is covered in peoples-collection-wales-contributions.md. Use a neutral caption and the catalogue ID, and link nothing.
3. **One contribution, not a pitch.** The society's annual newsletter takes member news. A 150-250 word piece ("the mainland side of 13 May 1897: what a Llandough farm's records show") is the format. It is offered only through the society's published address, and only on the project lead's GO (press/outreach rule). Draft it as a HubSpot task, never send it.
4. **Event volunteering is the warm route.** The society asks for helpers at its events (Facebook, read). Turning up is a human act and the project lead's call. We only note the dates.
5. **Measure:** each piece gets its own UTM'd /ebooks/ or /calendar/ link (utm_source=flatholm, utm_medium=newsletter|pcw). Check after 8 weeks. Under 10 visits means stop, and the slot goes back to bigger channels.

## Pitfalls
- Under 1% of our time: it is small. Do the read and the PCW cross-reference once, then only the annual newsletter slot.
- The island is council-owned. Wording must stay neutral and must not touch our dispute (editorial rules: banned words, never name the project lead, nothing about family holdings).
- Flat Holm sits in the Cardiff authority, not the Vale. Do not merge it with Vale-only listings.
- No outbound links on public Cedwyn pages; island sources are cited by name only.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- **Calendar (cedwyn.bucklerfamily.estate/calendar/):** add 11, 13 and 18 May 1897 only if a Cedwyn page already carries them as site data. Our farm link to the trials is family testimony (app-demo-factcheck tier FAMILY_TRADITION), so it shows as context, not evidence. Pink "missing evidence" marking does not apply unless an MR record exists.
- **Archive cross-reference:** one research pass on the Flat Holm PCW collections. Any hit becomes a [CEDWYN GAP] HubSpot task for the online gap finder, never a direct site edit.
- **Newsletter piece:** a draft in HubSpot, with the project lead's GO needed before anyone sends it. Target the society's next annual issue. The deadline is not published (not checked).
- **2027 hook:** 130 years on 13 May 2027. Pair it with the radio-club plan in the Marconi file. The island's own channels (Facebook/Instagram "Flat Holm Island") are where a shared post would land. Only repost theirs; never tag-spam.
