# GIPHY brand channel: put archive GIFs and stickers into Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger search

Date: 30 Oct 2026 · Skill harvest · Topic: Instagram/Facebook growth, heritage visuals, free reach

## Why (read 30 Oct 2026)
- GIPHY's search powers the GIF and sticker pickers in the big messaging apps. marketingexamples.com (Harry Dry, read) states: **Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp use the GIF API, while Instagram, TikTok and Snap use the sticker API** (stickers have transparent backgrounds). He quotes GIPHY's own "7 billion served to 500 million people a day" (a vendor figure; don't repeat it).
- **Live heritage benchmarks** (channel pages read 30 Oct 2026):
  - U.S. National Archives: **1.4K uploads, 9.6B GIF views**
  - Smithsonian NMAAHC: **108 uploads, 342.5M views** (32.3M in Cuseum's 2018 write-up)
  - Brooklyn Museum: **181 uploads, 76.6M views** (1.4M from 48 uploads in 2018)
  - These are GIPHY's "views" (one per time GIPHY serves the GIF), not people and not clicks.
- Harry Dry's small-brand example: Karla and Co., about **100,000 views a day from 16 stickers**, by owning a phrase nobody else had tagged ("Ay Mama"). Low-competition tags beat crowded ones. (Single anecdote, not checked against GIPHY.)
- Tate Britain's "1840s GIF Party" (Cuseum, 2018, read): **500+ public submissions**, one GIF reblogged **100,000+ times**, **25,000 new Tumblr followers**, and **2,500 visitors** to the Late at Tate event built around it.
- Guessed UK handles came up with no live channel: nationalarchivesuk, britishlibrary, museumwales, amgueddfacymru, LlyfrgellGenedlaethol. That's a hint the Welsh heritage space is uncrowded, **not proof** (only those handles were tried).

## The rules (GIPHY help pages, read via archived copies, 2025)
1. **The channel type matters.** "Creator" is for original, *non-commercial* content. Anyone **selling goods or services must apply as a Brand**. Cedwyn sells e-books, so it's a Brand.
2. **What a Brand application needs:**
   - an email on the **company domain that matches the username**
   - a working link to our **own web domain** (social profiles don't count)
   - a public social profile
   - a 250×250 avatar
   - **at least 5 uploads** first
   - one application per account
3. **Only accepted (upgraded) channels get their tagged GIFs into GIPHY search and the API.** Harry Dry: "Only with a brand channel are your GIFs publicly searchable", and his non-original GIFs were rejected. Verification (the blue badge, @username search) is a separate, later step via GIPHY's contact form.
4. **Original content only.** Use our own restored scans, movie-door frames and hologram tiles. Never other archives' footage (rights) and never a likeness of real family members (existing editorial rule).
5. **Tag for searches people really type that have little competition:** Welsh words and place names (Llandough, Leckwith, Patagonia, Gŵyl y Glaniad, Dydd Gŵyl Dewi), period phrases, and record types ("1916 tenancy", "tithe map"). Check each tag by hand on giphy.com and prefer ones with almost no results.
6. **Branding inside the frame:** a small "cedwyn.bucklerfamily.estate" corner mark. GIPHY gives no link-back from inside the apps, so the watermark is the only route back. Keep text minimal.

## How we apply it to Cedwyn
- **Blocker only the project lead can clear:** the Brand application needs an address on the bucklerfamily.estate domain that matches the username (e.g. a `cedwyn@` alias) and acceptance of GIPHY's terms in his name. Log this in the project workspace as a decision, not a message, and don't create the account until he states GO (it's a new public channel, so it's a PROPOSAL per BRIEF/programme-office rules).
- **Prepare now, at zero cost:**
  - Cut 8 loops of 2–4 s at 480 px from existing movie doors and restored scans with ffmpeg (already on the box; same pipeline as tools/email_video_thumb.py). Keep each under 2 MB.
  - Make 3 transparent-background stickers (WebP/GIF) of a Welsh word or date card for Instagram Stories.
  - Stage everything in the project workspace with a tags.csv (tag, giphy result count checked by hand, date).
- **Editorial rules:** no banned words in tags or titles, never name the project lead, nothing about family holdings, no insignia.
- **Measure:** GIPHY's channel analytics (views per GIF) monthly into the Sunday growth notes. Also watch site referrals and brand searches, since GIPHY views alone don't sell e-books.
- **Kill rule:** if after 90 days the channel has under 50k views, or no change in branded search or /ebooks/ visits, stop uploading and leave it as it is.
- **Event hooks:** stage a St David's Day (1 Mar) set and a Gŵyl y Glaniad (28 Jul) set ahead of time.
