FARMER AND THE POLICEMAN. At Penarth Police-court on Wednesday (before Mr. Lewellen Wood and Mr. J. W. Pyman), John Williams, a powerful-looking young fellow, son of Mr. William Williams, of Llandough Farm, was charged under arrest with stealing a packet of baking-powder from a trolley belonging to Messrs. H. S. Budgett and Co., Card,if, on the 19th inst. He was also charged with violently assaulting the police on the occasion of his arrest, Mr. L. H. Allen Pratt, LL.B. (Messrs. Lloyd and Pratt, solicitors Cardiff), appeared for the defence. Prisoner, whilst under the influence of drink on the date named, took a packet of baking- powder from a trolley which was passing along Penarth-road. He overtook a lad named Middleton, with whom he had a con- versation about cows. Prisoner handed him the packet, and told him if he gave the powder to the cows they would give milk all the year round. The driver of the trolley missed the packet, and gave information to the police, the aocused being subsequently apprehended by Police-constable Morgan, who took him back to Penarth in a 'bus. On the way he asked the constable what he had been arrested for, but the constable would not tell him, whereupon he sprang at the officer in the 'bus. seized him by the throat, and struck him and kicked him. The defence set up was that the accused, being in drink, knew nothing of the theft, and he struck the constable because he would not tell him why he had arrested him. Mr. Wood felt that the assault upon the constable was unprovoked and unwarranted, and prisoner was fined £5. in default a month's imprisonment with hard labour. The charge of theft was dismissed.
