Mr. J ackson p<iie.U>d out that the defen- dant, who was in a good way of business, was a married man. Oiie ia-oiild iiot expect, under the Circumstances that there would be much out- iftde talk, for the defendant—this somewhat clever man of tho world—being in business, was bound to keep it as "dark" as he could. The girl was influenced by the defen- dant's threats, but she kept her own coun- sel. and did not even tell her mother. The applicant, who is a prepossessing girl of twenty-one years, told the Bench that she entered defendant's employ in May, 1912. Evidence that he had .eon the g:r! and defendant together on several occasions at the dockside was given by Fred Westall. of Barry Island. Once, he said, he saw the defendant in a compromising attitude with, the girl near the Barry Dock St-c-ani Joinery. Mary Georgina Lane, m-other of the girl, gave evidence similar to that of the previous heaiing. At a further interview with Para- dise, she said, the defendant offered to give the complainant a sovereign or two on con- dition that it would not be regarded as "hush money," hut defendant's wife said. "If you give them any money ] shall leave you." As in the previous hearing, the defendant, on oath, denied the allegations of the com- plainant. lk<c Pa¡-¡j:t-. w<fe of the defendant, said she had been marr.e-d <<ighteen years.
