BARRY LOCAL FOOD CON- TROL COMMITTEE. SUGGESTED REMEDY FOR HIGH MEAT PRICES. Councillor J. E. Levers, J.P., pre- sided at a meeting of Barry Local Food Control Committee on Thursday evening last. There were also present, Councillors J. Marshall, S. R. Jones, 1 D. Lloyd, and Howell Williams, Messrs. E. G. Dobson, J. Channings, and J. Gough, Mrs. Taylor, and Irs. I: Cheeke. I THE PRICE OF BREAD AND MILK. Following the comments of members upon the extra charge for credit on bread for over a week, a letter was received from the Cardiff Food Con- trol Committee, stating that the price of bread is that town was 9d. per 41b. loaf, and 9td. for credit over a month. The question of making the extra charge for credit or" not was not yet quite definite, and the question lay with the bakers themselves to decide. The Clerk (Mr. T. B. Tordoff) said he had written to the local Master Bakers' Association, but had not yet received a reply. The Chairman I have been told that the extra halfpenny has not yet been charged. Mr. S. R. Jones If we take things quietly the whole thing will right it- self. Mr. J. Marshall moved, and Mr. S. R. Jones seconded, that the matter be adjourned till the next meeting. This was agreed to. I OTHER COMMODITIES. A memorandum of retail meat prices received from the Ministry of Food was considered. Mr. S. B. Sommerfield, the deputy executive officer, reported that com- plaints had been received that milk was sold at a greater price than that fixed by the Committee. Milk was sold at 3-id..per pint, and half-pints at 2d. in small shops. Potato dealers were now required to register, and the necessary forms had been delivered. Over 9,000 sugar forms had been examined 600 were incorrectly filled. There had been a distinct shortage of bacon and butter during the past week, and in some shops practically unob- tainable. Uncontrolled butter had risen as high as 2/10 per lb. SALE OF LIVE STOCK. Mr. Channings moved that they ask the Food Controller to take steps to stop the sale of live stock by auc-' tion. it was due to the auction marts that meat was being sold at such high price. He had been told that farmers had gune to sales, and even bid them- selves to increase the price of the cattle. Mr. J. Marshall said that the Food Controller had already been informed of this, and he had replied that the butchers could stop it bv not buying at the "markets. It was almost impos- sible for the butchers to buy other than by auction, because there were more buyers than sellers. It was decided to send the resolution to the Food Controller. A letter from the Ministry of Food urging the necessity of killing as many rabbits as possible was received. Further applications for registration of sugar retailers were considered. The fixing of the retail prices of potatoes was deferred. Mr. T. L. Spiel cett was appointed inspector under the Food Control Orders. It was reported that the official price of milk in Barry would be 6M. per quart for this month, and 7d. for the following six months. Complaints were received that this price «was being exceeded, and it was decided to prose- cute persons making further infringe- ments. The Ministry of Food gave the Com- mittee power to register for sugar sup- plies any association which sent sugar j to prisoners of war in Germanv.

BARRY WAR SAVINGS COM- MITTEE. ANOTHER WAR SAVINGS CAMPAIGN. Councillor J. E. Levers presided at a meeting of Barry War Savings Committee on Thursday afternoon last, when there were present, Rev. H. C. Weaver, Mr. H. Robert Top ping, Mr. T. McGirvan Hole, and Mr. Bennett. The question of inaugurating another war savings campaign was considered. Mr. Hole said with regard to economy, people were compelled to economise, because they could not purchase many things. The only thing they could do was to stimulate interest. Mr. Topping said that the secre- taries of the local associations should be communicated with, and asked for, suggestions. The most successful associations were those in the schools. Limelight lectures or free concerts would no doubt prove successful. It was agreed that Mr. Topping see local choir conductors, and endeavour to arrange a concert.
