Film festival submissions at $0: premiere status gate + free entries (documentary scenes)

Date: 2026-10-27 · Trigger: the project lead 12:50 27 Oct "Keep it free whatever that takes" (movie is $0 from now) while scenes publish online every 6 h.

What the record shows

How to do it (zero spend)

  1. Decide the unit you submit: one 2-min scene is a micro-short; a 10-15 min cut of several scenes is a short (most "short" categories run to 40 min; Tribeca's line is <40). Shorts are where online availability is tolerated.
  2. Build a sheet of 15-25 festivals: name, category, runtime cap, fee, premiere rule (quote the FAQ line + date read), deadline, waiver route. Only keep rows with fee £0 or a stated waiver route.
  3. Waiver ask: one short email to the programmer naming the film, runtime, why it fits their programme (local history, Welsh language, documentary) and asking if a fee waiver is possible. Expect many no's; record each answer. (Response rates: no published number found, not checked.)
  4. Screener: unlisted or password page with the full cut; never a trailer. Atlanta (read): they cannot judge from a clip, screener link must stay live until notification date.
  5. Status hygiene: tell a festival at once if premiere status changes (Atlanta requires it).
  6. Log laurels only from real acceptances; an "official selection" laurel is a strong sales-page trust cue for /documentary/, but only when true.
