EV-0057 — Hansard: Ted Rowlands MP criticises Western Ground Rents and BP pension fund

Quotation: the most rapacious ground landlord, Western Ground Rents, has been bought by the BP pension fund, which is behaving in the same rapacious and, at times, unfeeling and uncaring way in handling the genuine requests of householders.

Proves: On 22 May 1980, Ted Rowlands MP criticised in the House of Commons how the BP pension fund, as buyer of Western Ground Rents, was treating householders’ requests.

Does not prove: Does not mention Great House Farm, Llandough, or the Williams/Buckler family; Concerns only the WGR–BP ownership chain.

Interpretation: working hypotheses

Working hypotheses, kept apart from the record above. The record text on this page is unchanged. None of these is a finding: each line is labelled as inference, theory, a reading that cuts against the case, or a discarded theory, and names the evidence it rests on and what would confirm or refute it, so the reader can test it. Updated 25 Oct 2026 (v2: ingredients wording).

Demolition, archaeology and the green

DISCARDED THEORY · H-04DISCARDED: the theory that the 22 May 1980 Commons debate put the farm dispute before Parliament before the 1983 registration. Reason: the debate concerns leasehold valuations and Western Ground Rents' sale to the BP pension fund; Llandough, the farm and Mrs Buckler are not mentioned.

Rests on: EV-0057 (this page) · research log E05, E48

Would be confirmed by: Would be revived by another Hansard entry naming the farm.

Would be refuted by: Refuted on the debate text.

Status: Discarded
