Iron Age farmstead, succeeded by Roman villa in two main phases, followed after break in occupation, punctuated with early medieval burial, by medieval grange.
Description :
Iron Age farmstead (Phase I), succeeded by Roman villa in two main phases (II and III), partly explored during salvage excavations.
Phase I: Iron Age occupation represented by possible palisade trench, curvilinear slot and a number of postholes (=?round hut); associated with small amount of pottery, including Glastonbury ware which is probably indicative of pre-Conquest date.
Phase II: Villa, represented by rectangular stone structures, one room hypocausted, adjoining a courtyard with a pair of enclosure/?drainage ditches; probably wall-plaster.
Phase III: Filling of enclosure ditches; two new ranges of villa buildings, including small bath suite; new precinct wall; pipe trench with pipe collars still in situ; 3rd-4th century.
[Phases IV-V are medieval = PRNs 02272s, 03719s]
