Cedwyn outline · Chubut coast

The outline of the Cedwyn estate fields, as drawn on the Tithe H3 map of Llandough, set on the shore of Golfo Nuevo south of Puerto Madryn at the same distance from the sea: true size, north up.

For comparison only: the estate’s outline transposed to the Chubut coast at the same distance from the sea. It does not mark any land in Argentina.

The same outline where it is drawn on the Tithe H3 map, with the line to the nearest point of the sea.

How it was made

  1. The outline. The 43 parcels of the Tithe H3 map (version 0.4.0): the David Stewart estate plan traced through the 1841 tithe map of Landough, Cogan and Leckwith onto today’s map.
  2. Distance from the sea at Llandough. Measured from the outline’s centre (its area-weighted centroid) to the nearest point of the coastline as mapped in OpenStreetMap. That coastline follows the Cardiff Bay barrage, so the impounded bay counts as inland water. The nearest sea is at the barrage by Penarth Head, 2.65 km from the centre; the nearest field edge is 2.00 km from it.
  3. Where on the Chubut coast. The shore of Golfo Nuevo about 9.7 km south-east of the centre of Puerto Madryn, between Punta Cuevas and Punta Loma: the first stretch of open coast past the southern edge of the town. From that point of the shore the centre was set 2.65 km inland at right angles to the coast (towards the south-west, bearing about 216°). Checked afterwards: the nearest coast to the new centre is 2.65 km away, and the nearest field edge 2.05 km.
  4. Same shape and size. Every corner of every parcel was written as metres east and north of the centre, then rebuilt from those metres around the new centre. The outline keeps its size (54.4 ha in both places) and north stays north; it is not turned or mirrored. The southern hemisphere does not flip it.
  5. H3. The same resolutions as the Llandough map: 8 (the cell holding each parcel’s centre) and 10 to 13, worked out in your browser with h3-js; a cell is drawn when its centre falls inside a parcel. The counts differ between the two places because H3 cells are not all the same size across the globe: at resolution 12 a cell is about 234 m² here and about 285 m² at Llandough.
