The house and the farm

Every form below names, or has been taken to name, the house and farm beside St Dochdwy’s Church at Llandough-juxta-Penarth. Tŷ Mawr is Welsh for “great house”. The first record we have found that names Tŷ Mawr is David Stewart’s 1824 survey of the Bute Glamorgan estates, plan 19, “Cedfin or Ty Mawr Farm” (EV-0211). Forms dated earlier come from Bute or other third-party papers and catalogue headings; each is shown with its date and source, and each is under forensic examination, not counted as a record of Tŷ Mawr.

Great House Farm

The Mansion of Llandough · 1543 and 1793 (in the book)

Source: A local history book, chapter ‘Llandough (Penarth)’, p. 66: Henry VIII grants the Mansion of Llandough to Lord Clynton (1543); the Earl of Bute buys it (1793)
Written by: Local history book (title, author and year to be supplied)
Status: secondary
Our note: A separate holding. The book does not say the Mansion of Llandough is Tŷ Mawr and no record links the two. Listed here because the two are easily run together.

Cydwin · 1547

Source: Family research note: Sir George Herbert’s 1,000-year lease to Vaughan (EV-0002)
Written by: Family research note
Status: Under forensic examination
Our note: Document not held; holder not identified. Identity with Great House Farm not proved. Under forensic examination; not a record of Tŷ Mawr (first named in the 1824 David Stewart survey, EV-0211).

Cedwyn · 16th century (reported)

Source: Research corpus, 16th-century Llandough freehold / Vaughan material
Written by: Research corpus (family and Wiki notes)
Status: Under forensic examination
Our note: The underlying document has not been checked. Under forensic examination; not a record of Tŷ Mawr (first named in the 1824 David Stewart survey, EV-0211).

Cydwin · 13 Feb 1739/40

Source: NLW Lockwood estate records L 11, catalogue of an assignment (Vaughan to Mathews) of an earlier Herbert–Vaughan lease
Written by: National Library of Wales cataloguer (Lockwood estate records)
Status: Under forensic examination
Our note: Catalogue wording; the deed is unread. A third-party document naming Cydwin, not Tŷ Mawr. Under forensic examination; not a record of Tŷ Mawr (first named in the 1824 David Stewart survey, EV-0211).

Ty Mawr Farm otherwise Ked Fen Farm (126 a.) · 14 Oct 1806

Source: NLW Lockwood estate records D 1/104, catalogue of articles of agreement for an exchange between Mark Wood and the Marquess of Bute
Written by: National Library of Wales cataloguer (Lockwood estate records)
Status: Under forensic examination
Our note: The words are the cataloguer’s; the agreement itself is unread. It belongs to a Bute exchange, so it is tested here rather than counted as a record mention of Tŷ Mawr. The acreage (126 a.) differs from the 1824 survey. Under forensic examination; not a record of Tŷ Mawr (first named in the 1824 David Stewart survey, EV-0211).

Ty Mawr Farm or Red Fen Farm (126 a.) · 1807

Source: NLW Bute Estate Records D 205/6–7, catalogue of the completed exchange
Written by: National Library of Wales cataloguer (Bute Estate Records)
Status: Under forensic examination
Our note: Same exchange as Lockwood D 1/104 read by a different cataloguer: “Ked Fen” in one, “Red Fen” in the other (a capital K and R are easily confused in a cursive hand). The originals have not been compared. Under forensic examination; not a record of Tŷ Mawr (first named in the 1824 David Stewart survey, EV-0211).

Cydfin Farm or Ty Mawr Farm, (107 a.) · No Tŷ Mawr date: the range 1552–1824 is the Bute catalogue’s

Source: National Library of Wales, Bute Estate Records D219 catalogue (Llandough manorial leases, 1552–1824)
Written by: National Library of Wales cataloguer (Bute Estate Records)
Status: Under forensic examination (application and dating)
Our note: A Bute estate catalogue entry. Its heading and its date range are the cataloguer’s; the leases have not been read. It is not a dated mention of Tŷ Mawr, and its application to Tŷ Mawr and its dating are under forensic examination. Tŷ Mawr is first named in a record we have found in the 1824 David Stewart survey (EV-0211).
