Edition v0.01 (free) · version 0.1.0 · 26 October 2026 · compiled for the Cedwyn archive, cedwyn.bucklerfamily.estate
Why this register exists¶
The story of Tŷ Mawr has been scattered because the house, the town and the estate have so many names. Tŷ Mawr, Ty-mawr, Great House, Great House Farm, Cedfin, Cydfin, Cydwin, Ked Fen, Red Fen, Llandough Home Farm, Church Farm, Llandough Farm; Llandough-juxta-Penarth and Llandough near Cowbridge; parcels, title numbers and plan numbers. Each form has been used by someone, at some date, for some purpose. Read together, they show where names and dates have been played on, and where one place has been passed off as another.
This register puts every form we hold in one place, with five facts for each: the form, its date, the source document, who wrote it, and our note on the confusion it carries.
How we read the record¶
This archive is the chronology. We set out our evidence and our reading of it, and we stand behind both. Outside narratives, online or in print, are tested against the records here; they are not repeated as fact.
1824 is the first record that names Tŷ Mawr that we have found: David Stewart’s survey of the Bute Glamorgan estates, plan 19, “Cedfin or Ty Mawr Farm” (Glamorgan Archives DB/E/1–2; EV-0211).
1667. The Williams family acquired Tŷ Mawr in 1667 (Mary Williams’ statement, 1974 newspapers; ITV News, 1988).
Bute and other third-party papers dated before 1824 (the Cydwin lease, the 1806–07 exchange) are not records of Tŷ Mawr. Each is listed with its source, and each is under forensic examination. The National Library of Wales Bute catalogue entry D 219 (“Cydfin Farm or Ty Mawr Farm”) carries no Tŷ Mawr date at all: its date range is the catalogue’s, and its application and dating are under forensic examination. The Bute freeholds themselves are under forensic examination for validity.
