Quotation (verbatim): D153/1-8, scope and content: “Deeds relating to premises in p. Llandough, co. Glam., comprising a dwelling house adjoining the churchyard, 1811 (D153/1-2), land (19 a.) for a brick and tile works at Cogan Pill, 1875 (D153/3) and land (33 a.), formerly part of Great House Farm, for the Llandough Limeworks (33 a.), 1876-1912 (D153/4-8). Plan engrossed on D153/3 (1875) and 4 (1876).” D247/1-69: “Deeds and documents relating to Penyrheol las, Farm, Quarry Mawr and woodland called Graig Willt (later Pwllypant Quarry), p. Eglwysilan, co. Glam., including a covenant by Thomas, lord Windsor, to produce scheduled deeds, 1676-1722 …” (1723-1895). D242/1-27: “Deeds and documents relating mainly to the title of the Pwllypant estate including copy probate of will of David Evan of Abertridwr, p. Eglwysilan, gent., 1775 (D242/1), copy probate of will of William Price of the Forge, p. Pen-tyrch, ironmaster, 1778 …” (1775-1921). D258/1-110: “Papers relating to the personal and real estates of William Evans Williams, dec., including an account of Aberdare Iron Co. tramroad tonnages, 1867 (D258/1), house account book, 1868-70 (D258/2) …” (1867-1877). The Pwllypant estate sub-sub-fonds is “D 242-259”, 1642-1921.

Fits with: The 33 acres sit in the Llandough entry (D153/4-8), named as “formerly part of Great House Farm” and given “for the Llandough Limeworks”. The Eglwysilan entries (D242, D247, D258) state no acreage. EV-0280 records the works on the OS sheets beside Ty-mawr.

Cuts against: The catalogue does not name the parties to D153/4-8, the grantor of the 33 acres, or which part of Great House Farm they were. The deeds and the plan engrossed on D153/4 (1876) are unread.

Correction recorded: A research summary received on 21 Oct 2026 stated that D153 “does not contain a 33-acre industrial quarry conveyance” and that the 33 acres came from the Eglwysilan files (D247). The catalogue reads the other way, as quoted above. The same summary placed D242 and D258 together as the probate and papers of William Evans Williams: D242 is the Pwllypant title file (copy probates of 1775 and 1778); D258 is the papers on his estate after his death.

Interpretation: working hypotheses

Working hypotheses, kept apart from the record above. The record text on this page is unchanged. None of these is a finding: each line is labelled as inference, theory, a reading that cuts against the case, or a discarded theory, and names the evidence it rests on and what would confirm or refute it, so the reader can test it. THEORY · R-01Ground R5: the court's starting point — a Feb 1916 tenancy of "the whole of the farm" and BP's "paper title to the farm" — would fail for the farmhouse if the 1938 Bute → Western Ground Rents conveyance did not include it. The 1905 Bute conveyance and the 1924 drain agreement show Bute dealing with land here, so either the house came back to the main estate by a deed not yet seen, or the 1916 recital is loose.

Would be confirmed by: The 1938 conveyance plan showing the house parcel excluded.

Would be refuted by: The 1938 plan including it. Cuts against: paper title was not in issue in 1987 (E26), and the NLW 33-acre limeworks bundle (1876–1912) fits a letting that ended in 1912 rather than a sale (E43).
