Quotation (verbatim): “PLAN FOR HOUSE: VALE councillors are to hold [a] site meeting in Llandough to discuss plans by the BP Pension Trust to build a house there. The trust propose to build on land at Penlan Road but Llandough Community Council say the access to the plot would be dangerous …” (South Wales Echo, 29 Jul 1983, p.21). “BP Pension Trust has sold its residential freehold ground [rents in] South Wales, in one of the biggest property deals of its kind in Britain for many years. The deal [is] with Cefn Estates …” (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 7 Feb 1981, p.6). OCR slips corrected; square brackets mark words the OCR garbles.
Fits with: BP Pension Trust was still developing land in Llandough in July 1983, four months after Mary (Nancy) Williams died at the farmhouse and while first registration (WA231076, WA240304) was in progress. The 1981 sale shows the ground-rent estate WGR brought into BP in 1969 being sold on, while the Llandough land was kept.
Cuts against: Whether the Penlan Road plot was part of Great House Farm is unverified (most likely it was BP land near the farm; the plot is not identified in the snippet). Neither snippet names Great House Farm.
Notes: Vale of Glamorgan planning register (1983 application by BP Pension Trust, Penlan Road); Llandough Community Council minutes 1983 (Glamorgan Archives P35, from 1982).

Interpretation: working hypotheses
Working hypotheses, kept apart from the record above. The record text on this page is unchanged. None of these is a finding: each line is labelled as inference, theory, a reading that cuts against the case, or a discarded theory, and names the evidence it rests on and what would confirm or refute it, so the reader can test it. Updated 25 Oct 2026 (v2: ingredients wording).
The Intercontinental sale motive
INFERENCE · S-01Records on the land's later use, set side by side. The 23 May 1975 conveyance reserved 80-year rights to build roads and sewers across the farmhouse plot "to serve any development of the Retained Land" (EV-0052). In Dec 1986 BP Properties granted a charge to Intercontinental Land & Development Co Ltd (EV-0251); S-02 records it as a commercial relationship, not a dealing with Llandough. In Oct 1988 the BP Pension Fund sold about 1,300 acres in South Wales to Intercontinental Land & Development (Cardiff) Ltd for £29,375,400 after a tender (EV-0093, EV-0270, record, press and company filings). Working hypothesis: a registered title made the land easier to sell for development. Nothing read so far ties the 1982–83 filings to that sale, and S-02 sets out why a pre-arranged sale was discarded.

Would be confirmed by: The Land Authority for Wales board papers (TNA WA 9/49) or the 1988 sale schedule showing Great House Farm in the package and reliance on the 1983 title.
Would be refuted by: A sale schedule excluding the farm, or evidence that the sale was conceived only after the 31 Jul 1987 judgment.
